Stranger Things Season 5 was released in three parts, anchored to a holiday schedule spanning from Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. While it promised to wrap up long-running mysteries, the season was a predictable drag that recycled old plot lines and failed to deliver a compelling conclusion. Fans were eager to jump back into the terrifying world of Hawkins, but were left without the satisfying closure they waited years for.
This season was an uninspiring installment that failed to measure up to audience expectations. By pulling back the curtain on the Upside Down, the show ruins its sense of mystery and horror. Vecna’s story is repeated again, making it feel like the writers have run out of new ideas and are simply retracing familiar ground. In the final season, Vecna once again targets a child to strengthen his connection to the physical world. He kidnaps Holly Wheeler, pulling her into a dreamlike mindscape that mimics the Creel House, mirroring how he trapped Max in her own memories and Will in the “now-memories” of the Upside Down in earlier seasons. As a result, the mystery that made earlier seasons thrilling is nearly gone, and the show prioritizes over-the-top action scenes over genuine plot development.
Another major issue is the lack of real stakes, driven by poor character handling. Mike fails to evolve, repeating the same emotional speeches, while Will’s feelings for him are merely hinted at rather than developed. Similarly, Eleven is portrayed as powerful but lacks personal growth, and the town of Hawkins no longer feels like a real place. The danger feels inconsequential because characters constantly survive impossible situations, making the few perilous events that do occur feel forced for shock value rather than earned. Furthermore, numerous characters were sidelined, they appeared only as tools for fight scenes, and went without proper growth. The final episodes attempt to be grand and emotional, but the result is rushed and underwhelming. This approach strips the season of its weight, leaving it feeling hollow and easily dismissed.
I have to agree with the majority of the fans on this one, I am highly disappointed with how they handled this season. The directional choices feel disjointed, making the overall experience a real letdown. After building such incredible momentum, fans were expecting so much more from where they left off on Season 4. Unfortunately, this latest installment failed to stick the landing, transforming what should have been a triumphant chapter into a devastatingly disappointing end to the series legacy.
