Roughly ten million people in Cuba are experiencing a detrimental, nationwide blackout. Cuba residents experience twelve hour daily outages due to two grid collapses within the past week.
Since March 2026, Cuba has suffered major blackouts, not just because power plants are failing, but because the U.S. has forced a blockade on oil, cutting off all foreign oil imports to Cuba. These thermoelectric power plants are unable to produce the energy needed for power throughout Cuba.
The U.S. has put a blockade on Cuba to pressure its government, respect for human rights, and to break its alliance with the Soviet Union. In other words, the U.S. is putting Cuba’s government under pressure, which is detrimental to its people. Citizens are in a crisis because of the United States’ actions.
Resources like food and water are being diminished because of these power outages. However, some international socialist groups made their way into Havana over the weekend to support the Cuban government, donating solar panels, basic food kits, and medicines.
