Alexander Vindman announced his campaign for Florida Senator on January 27th, long after the selection of previous Florida Senator Marco Rubio to be President Donald Trump’s Secretary of State. Vindman is running against Republican Former Attorney Gen. Ashley Moody in the United States Senate.
Vindman’s brother Eugene was a lawyer for the NSA, and now a Virginian congressman. If Vindman wins the democratic nomination for Florida’s seat in the U.S. Senate. “Framing his Senate campaign as both a personal reckoning and a broader argument about democracy, accountability and the direction of the Republican Party,” according to USA Today. He will compete against incumbent GOP Senator Moody was elected by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in Jan 2025, to fill the vacancy left by Rubio to be Secretary of State.
Vindman came from an Ukranian-Jewish background during when Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union, serving in the Army before being an aide to Trump on the National Security Council in 2019, then helping impeach Trump alongside his brother, Eugene Vindman. “Vindman, an Army veteran, was serving on the National Security Council in 2019 when the Republican president pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate Joe Biden,” as stated by AP News.
The Florida special election will take place this year and whoever gets elected will need to run again in 2028 due to Moody’s status as an appointed senator, with Moody and Vindman running campaign ads in convincing voters in Florida to elect them.
