The University High School JV Cheer Team proudly brought home first place on December 6th for a standout performance at the Hagerty High School cheer competition. The UHS Cougars set themselves apart with their precision, energy, and dedication, earning top marks from the judges and enthusiastic support from the crowd.
The team’s winning routine featured a combination of sharp motions, synchronized jumps, and high-level stunts that showcased the athletes’ strength and coordination. Their clean execution especially in a division known for tough competition reflected countless hours of practice and teamwork. “Our goal was to go out there confident and connected, and they absolutely did that,” said sophomore Sophia Castro-Cortez. Coaches noted that the athletes have been pushing themselves since the start of the season, constantly refining skills and building trust within the team.
One of the challenges the team faced while learning the routine came just weeks before the competition. “We also had to work on stamina; our football games have moments of pauses where the cheerleaders can catch their breath, and rehydrate. We overcame this by conditioning at practices, running the routine to help build that stamina, and discussing healthy habits they can do at home to build stamina,” said JV cheer coach Nesmith University High as the team was announced as first-place champions, praising both their athleticism and school spirit.
Athletes also reflected on the personal impact of competing at Hagerty High School. “Even though at the beginning I was very nervous, after we got off the mat the vibes and energy were very inviting, and I felt a part of a great community,” said freshman JV Cheer Captain Ty’anna Gale. Along with the JV team’s success, the University High Varsity Cheer Squad has officially qualified for States, marking a huge achievement for the entire cheer program. With JV taking first place and Varsity advancing to state competition, University High cheer is having an outstanding season.
