On January 7th, an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Goode, an unarmed U.S. citizen in Minneapolis while she was blocking the road in her car. The death of Goode has led to protests all over Minnesota and discourse as to whether or not it was self defense.
Renee Goode was blocking the road in her neighborhood with her SUV when ICE agents approached her and demanded she get out of the car. Goode then drove forward in an attempt to turn the car when she was shot four times in the face by an agent. “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers,” said Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for public affairs Tricia McLaughlin.
Citizens all around the nations spoke out against the claim that the officer was acting in self defense and have been voicing their opinions through peaceful protests and walkouts. Memorials have sprouted all around Minneapolis with gifts, flowers, and signs like “Justice for Renee” to allow people to mourn. “They are already trying to spin this as an action of self defense. Having seen the video myself I want to tell everybody directly, that is [BS],” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.
The Trump administration has taken a firm stance in support of the ICE officer, stating that they believe Renee Goode was committing an act of terrorism. “Based on the attached clip, it is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital… the Radical Left is threatening, assaulting, and targeting our Law Enforcement Officers and ICE Agents on a daily basis,” said President Donald Trump.
