As the first quarter of the school year comes to an close, students are still buzzing about the recent homecoming festivities. On Friday, September 26, University High School had their homecoming football game against Oak Ridge, and on the same day they hosted Hoco Fest. Students then danced the night away at homecoming the next day. The theme this year was announced by our SGA as, “Once Upon a Time,” meaning the school was transformed into a fairytale wonderland.
Hoco Fest, or Homecoming Festival, is a tradition at UHS that brings students and staff together in celebration of our school spirit. The Homecoming Festival takes place the evening before the homecoming dance. Hoco Fest is from 5-7 pm and it is right before the homecoming football game. Our school clubs host a variety of different booths with games to play, tasty food trucks to indulge in, and prizes to win.
You may wonder what’s new for this year’s Hoco Fest, according to the head of the Student Government Association, “Students can expect a truly magical experience. Although we just started planning it, every club is going to contribute to the fun festivities. Expect magical fairytale themed booths and games,” said SGA Sponsor, Ms. Rasmussen. Thinking about the whimsical nature of this upcoming fiction fantasy, this year’s homecoming festival will definitely be more creative than ever before. Safety is always a priority at UHS events, and with Hoco Fest there is no exception. We decided to ask a question about how the school plans to keep the festival safe and secure. “By keeping a watchful eye and swooping in anytime there’s danger,” said Dean Greene.
Following the Hoco Fest is the Homecoming football game. One of the most anticipated games of the season. “Absolutely I am going! And we are totally winning that game, no doubt,” said junior Maxwell Norris. With our administrators on the lookout, students can freely enjoy the festival while knowing that it’ll be greatly supervised to ensure a safe but also fun experience for all.
