Inventing Anna is an amazing new Netflix miniseries inspired by an article in the New York magazine named How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People by Jessica Pressler.

Anna Sorokin (played by Julia Garner) is a Russian con-artist who pretended to be a wealthy German heiress and deceived many hotels, banks, restaurants, institutions and socialites from 2013 to 2017. She went by the name Anna Delvey upon moving to the United States and claimed to have a large trust fund from her father who was a wealthy business owner.

Sorokin used to go to many events where she would brag about her luxury clothing and her trust fund, but would always ask to sleep over at others house or ask other socialites to help pay her expenses claiming she forgot her wallet. While in New York she came up with a plan to start her own art foundation called the Anna Delvey Foundation, which would have cost her over $40 million in renovations of the Church Missions House.

But one thing that makes this series different from other series based on Anna Delvey is that it doesn’t focus on Anna Delvey herself. The series focuses on the journalist behind the Anna Delvey story that made Sorokin the famous con-artist she is today.

This miniseries has garnered a lot of attention online because it provides the perspective of Jessica Pressler (played by Anna Chlumsky), who is the journalist who made Sorokin famous because of the article about her crimes. But while many people are saying that the show is great, there are some critics of the show saying that it glamorizes scam artists and is an over-fictionalized portrayal of Sorokin.

While this show is only 9 episodes, I truly believe that it shows how much hard work went behind the magazine story that made Anna Sorokin the popular con-artist she is. Many other shows about Anna Delvey don’t shed enough light on the real reason why she is as famous as she is now. While the show does contain a lot of fictional information, it provides a perfect balance of fiction and fact for viewers to be entertained and informed.
