A Minecraft Movie has quickly become one of the biggest movies of the year, selling 163 million tickets in North America according to Warner Bros. With Minecraft being one of the biggest games and having huge popularity, you could see why a movie would finally be made on it.
The movie was first shown in some trailers, which had some people skeptical about the quality of the film. With Jack Black playing the default Minecraft skin called “Steve,” we had no idea how the movie would turn out. Online, many complained about how the movie was seemingly just Jack Black saying Minecraft items, as well as other aspects of the game. Clips of Jack Black saying “I am Steve” and “the nether” quickly made their way to social media platforms like TikTok. People were convinced that the movie would just be laughably bad.
While the movie is by no means a serious film, that is decidedly not what the filmmakers aimed for. Personally, I feel as though the movie did what it should’ve done. The movie successfully appeals to both kids and long-time fans of the game. The movie is great for young fans of Minecraft, having a young kid named “Henry” who is starting his first day at school, before entering the world of Minecraft, as part of the plot to appeal to younger audiences.
The movie also features some iconic figures known by long-time fans of the game, such as YouTuber “DanTDM” and a reference to Technoblade, after the actor of Henry (Sebastian Hansen) had asked the directors if he could be referenced in the movie after he passed away from cancer. The movie used Minecraft aspects decently well, and didn’t go off far from aspects of the actual game.
The movie overall was a great, enjoyable watch, and I’d recommend going to see the movie with a group of friends. The movie is certainly a funny one.
