The Varsity Boys Tennis team recently had a game against Oak Ridge where UHS was up 3-2, but they were not able to finish their game because they were rained out during their game. Coach Centoducati believes if the game continued, then UHS would have emerged victorious.
Although this season had challenges, the team was thrilled that they beat their biggest rival, Colonial High School. “We destroyed them, 7-0 for both girls and boys,” said Coach Centoducati. This is always a goal for UHS sports teams and the athletes achieved it.
After a loss with East river with a score of 4-3, the team will be having a rematch next week, which will determine where the team will fall in the Metro Playoffs. There are high expectations set for the team since a potential Principals Trophy is also in order.
The athletes will be playing at home on March 27 against Wekiva, which will attract many UHS students since the team is getting closer to the Metro Playoffs at the United States Tennis Association. There are also high expectations for the end of the season, which is the district tournament on April 14th to April 17th at the Fort Gatlin Tennis Center.
Many players have reported this season to be a rocky one with challenging and strenuous games. “There’s huge ups and huge downs, it’s definitely like a rollercoaster of emotions,” said senior player Emilio Mendizabal. Despite the tough season, the team remains very positive and enthusiastic before each set of every game. Coach Centoducati says that Emilion Mendizabal is the team’s spark plug because of his game day rituals and frisky energy.
UHS students and administrators look forward to the rest of the athletes season and their Metro Playoffs starting on March 31st. Students hope to see more players playing in sets and look forward to witnessing their energetic sportsmanship on the court.
