One of the top causes of death in teenagers is car accidents. Unfortunately, families in Orlando have suffered tragic losses because of fatal car accidents.
On February 12, a two vehicle car crash near Narcoossee Road killed 17-year-old Lake Nona High School student Anthony Sanchez and injured two others just before noon. Some sources say there were 3 seniors involved in the violent crash. Witnesses said they saw the cars traveling at high speed while swerving through traffic before the collision happened. This tragic accident left families and friends devastated while they gathered for a memorial service a week after his death. “Please enjoy one another while you have them because wishing you did after can’t will always feel horrible,” said one of Sanchez’s friends. We send our condolences to the friends and family of the victims of this devastating accident.
Another tragic accident this past Saturday, March 1st, on Central Florida Parkway resulted in the death of 4 men and 1 seriously injured.
According to Orlando Sentinel, a 20-year-old man driving a Toyota Camry and a 26-year-old man driving a BMW M2 were travelling on Central Florida Parkway at high speeds, possibly racing, when the BMW collided with the front left of the Toyota camry. This impact caused the two cars to run off the road onto the south shoulder. The Toyota Camry struck a light pole and several trees while the BMW traveled south on the shoulder, leading to the front left striking multiple trees. As a result of the impact, Sammy Lahik, 18-year-old Windermere High School student, was ejected from the Toyota Camry. Moad Machti was killed alongside Sammy Lahik in the accident.
The Orlando Islamic community mourns the loss of Sammy Lahik and Moad Mahqti. Tariq Rasheed said Sammy Lahik was a devout member of the Islamic Center of Orlando. Lahik was also set to attend Duke University. “A brilliant kid, good at studies, and a gentleman,” said Rasheed.
As we mourn the loss of many young men in Orlando, we should remind our loved ones around us to drive safely. Driving on the road always presents a risk. It is important to reestablish safe driving habits, especially in younger drivers today. Not only should we remind the importance of safe driving, but we should also appreciate our loved ones as much as we can. These kinds of losses can happen so quickly and suddenly, so remind those around you that you cherish each other and the precious time you spend together.
