The UHS Jazz Ensembles and Big Band participated in their district level assessment at Horizon High School on February 7th. The bands performed exceptionally well receiving one excellent performance score for jazz ensemble two, one superior performance for jazz ensemble and another superior for their Big Band productions.
The bands performed solos as well as group ensembles to represent the hard work of the performing arts program. “I’ve been practicing since the beginning of summer for my solo,” said junior Kevin Rosales. Rosales, a student from the magnet program, played the euphonium in a tuba quartet, a trombone in a trombone quartet, a brass trio and a solo all of which earned superiors.
The band performed their rendition of various charts, which are Big Band pieces written down. “Our Big band played a Buddy Rich chart called Big Swing Face, we did a vocal Jazz Ballad called Black Coffee,” said Band Director Mr. Brown.
These achievements piles on to a long list of the high scores received during these assessments. The bands never earned below an Excellent score, a product of the dedication of these students.
