Valentine’s Day is a day entirely dedicated to love, whether romantic or platonic. This holiday is widely celebrated across the world, predominantly in the United States, Britain, and Canada. This year, American spending for Valentine’s Day was estimated at a grand total of 27.5 billion US dollars.
Some notable traditions include asking someone to be your Valentine before the holiday and bringing gifts to them on February 14th. According to surveys conducted by abc11, This year’s most popular gifts are “candy, flowers, greeting cards, an evening out, and jewelry.” However that special someone doesn’t have to be a significant other, many UHS students showed love for their friends in the form of gift giving. “My friend Michael gave me some snacks that I enjoyed,” said sophomore Kyan Rosado.
Many students enjoyed the company of family and other loved ones, “I spent my Valentine’s Day hanging out with people I love, like my family,” said sophomore Larry Harris. Others opted for a laid back approach just stayed home and played their favorite games, like “When I got home I played Fortnite and Red Dead Redemption 2,” said sophomore Sara Hernandez.
Students and staff showed their support by participating in the Valentine’s Day Spirit week, created by SGA. Each day of the school week was paired with a specific dress code to follow that was on theme with the holiday. Although this was optional many students dressed up for the occasion.
