This past Sunday, February 9th was the 59th Superbowl game with the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Philadelphia Eagles. The game ended with a final score of 22-40, with the Eagles taking home the trophy. Kendrick Lamar performed the Halftime show along with SZA, Mustard, and Serena Williams also made an appearance.
Lamar kicked off with his show with the song squabble up from his album GNX, then went into Humble and DNA off his album DAMN. His single euphoria, was played next which was part of his songs released as diss tracks to Drake. Next, man at the garden, luther, and peekaboo were next in his set all on his latest released album, GNX. He then played All the Stars from the Black Panther movie soundtrack which he collaborated with SZA on. His last two songs were Not Like Us and tv off, the former being a single released to diss Drake and the last from his recently released album, GNX. Fans of Lamar had been anticipating that he would play Not Like Us after the song was awarded five Grammys and to put the final nail in the coffin on his and Drake’s feud.
Lamar’s performance included many dancers who had outfits that made up the American flag in a part of his set and he also featured Samuel L. Jackson to play the role of Uncle Sam. Lamar made references to several political issues including the conflict in Gaza, in which a Palestinian flag being waved was cut out from the live recording of the show. He included sayings like 40 acres and a mule which was a promise made to freed slaves after the Civil War which was never granted by the U.S. government. Jackson in his role of Uncle Sam made snide comments on how Lamar should conduct himself claiming that he was, “too loud, too reckless, too ghetto.” Though, the performance has caused great controversy especially from the more conservative crowd– many viewers agree that it was a halftime show to remember.
