As U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (FL) is confirmed to become the secretary of state for Donald Trump’s Administration, Governor Ron DeSantis has selected Ashley Moody, Florida’s attorney general to be Rubio’s successor to the U.S. Senate seat.
Moody herself has been involved in the Florida Justice system for years and was elected in 2018 during her campaign to be the state’s attorney general as the same year that DeSantis won his first term as governor. Moody’s family has also been working for the Justice system for decades. “Her husband, Justin Duralia, became a deputy police chief in Plant City in July. Previously, he worked at the Drug Enforcement Administration for 24 years,” according to the Associated Press.
DeSantis chose Moody seeking someone who would take a hardline approach to illegal immigration enforcement, the fentanyl crisis, and a fierce support of republican judges and justices. DeSantis’ plans to fill the new vacancy for attorney general with James Uthmeier, his current chief of staff. Uthmeier was a former lawyer and campaign manager for Destantis when he ran his unsuccessful presidential bid.
