University High School clubs have begun their annual holiday drives. These collection drives aim to bring joy and support to families and individuals during the holiday season. These drives gather donations from students for clothes, food, and other essentials to help those in need.
Beta Club is putting together stockings for the Ronald Mcdonald House, offering children cheer for the holidays as well as bringing volunteering opportunities to club members. “We decided to do stockings for Ronald McDonald house because we wanted a festive way to give back. We usually give goody bags for families with kids in the hospital so I had the idea to do stockings with holiday treats instead. It was really fun writing and decorating the notes to the families during our meeting. I felt really good giving back during the holidays,” said junior Isabel Reymann, President of Beta club. The stockings were a way to bring back joy for the holidays.
HOSA hosted a book drive to Lawton Chiles Elementary School. This grants the opportunity to donate old books that have laid around the house and have no use. What better way to give them to elementary students rather than just throwing them away. “Hosting the book drive was a nice way to help out the community. Especially when all these books would’ve gone to waste,” said Amanda Borges, Vice President of HOSA.Books cannot be higher than a 6th grade reading level since they will be going to elementary aged students, but books can be new or gently used. Donations ended on Thursday December 12th. This is also another opportunity for students in HOSA to earn in-club hours especially for members who are missing out on some of the hours.
SGA is collecting toys for their holiday drive, this year’s theme is for “Toys For Joy”. The donations from students are given to the toys for tots organizations. “Toys for joy is our annual toy drive that we do in SGA. This year all donations collected from us were given to the toys for tots organization. Our goal is to put a smile on as many kids as we can on Christmas morning. We want our community to feel our warmth and support during the holidays,” said junior SGA member Akshay Ramjisingh. The drive ensures that children who are facing economic hardship can still experience the warmth and cheer of the holidays.
These donations are made possible due to the generosity of UHS students and staff as well as their surrounding community. Donations will be collected and distributed to organizations and local communities. These seasonal drives will last through December until the end of the quarter and all students are encouraged to donate.
