The romantic comedy with a tragic twist, We Live In Time, was released in theaters October 18th. This new film starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, attracted a lot of attention from younger audiences and erupted all over social media shortly after its premiere. This movie was packed with emotion, causing viewers to leave the theater with tears in their eyes, including myself.
The movie follows Almut, a professional cook, portrayed by Florence Pugh, who enters a relationship with a man named Tobias, played by Andrew Garfield. During the first third of the film, I found myself rather confused with the timeline as it flashed back and forth between the past and present, but as the movie progressed on, it all began to click. This movie was filled with a multitude of different emotions: anger, sadness, grief, confusion, and most of all, humor. Many scenes throughout the movie made the audience laugh, but many other scenes made the audience cry, taking the theater through an emotional rollercoaster.
Later in the movie, it is revealed that Almut has ovarian cancer and is advised to proceed with a treatment plan. Against her partner’s wishes, Almut signs up for the world renowned cooking competition, Bocuse d’Or, and trains for it in secret. When Tobias finds out about her secret training, he feels shocked and betrayed. We eventually realize that Almut did all of this so that her daughter will be able to remember her mother for something after she passes. At the end of the film, Almut, being a former figure skater, her partner, Tobias, and their daughter go to the ice skating rink to enjoy some of their last moments together. Almut then passes away, leaving only the memory of her with Tobias and their daughter.
This movie allowed me to feel as if I was a part of the story, intensifying the effect of the elation and the heartache the characters undergo. This movie demonstrates the struggles that many people must live through: disease rearing its ugly head between you, your goals, and your family, and causing emotional turmoil. I feel as though this movie unlocked another level of empathy in my mind as it led me to truly feel the emotions of each and every character. We Live In Time stresses the importance of cherishing moments and holding those we love close to our hearts. It shows us that time waits for no one and we can only do so much with what we have left so we should make it count. I think this film has the power to open people’s eyes to the important experiences that shape our lives. I absolutely recommend this movie, 10/10.
