Despite a challenging season for University High School’s Varsity football team, the team and their coach have stopped at nothing to prepare for future games this season. The players have been working hard by training heavily and reviewing plays after each game, as they prepare for their upcoming games against Colonial High School and Cypress Creek High School.
The Varsity Football team’s coach, Jeremy Palmer, says that the team is “taking strides in the right direction” and that they know where they want to be and they are on their way there. Coach Palmer speaks highly of his team and affirms that the team’s skill guys and defense are this season’s key attributes. The team is putting forth their strongest efforts and showing unwavering dedication, pushing themselves to reach their goals despite any difficulties they’ve faced on the field.
To keep the team motivated, Coach Palmer makes sure to include activity days and recreation during practice to raise morale. According to the team, this is very helpful to them because it keeps them striving for excellence. The players themselves have a tradition before their games to allow them to not only play their best during games, but have fun while doing so. “We listen to Chicken by El Snappo before our games for some fun,” said #5, Senior Noah Lowery. Other players agreed with him, this is one of their pregame rituals.
A few of the players who stand out and lead the team with exceptional skill and determination are #66 Senior Matthew Paul, #4 Senior Jahriel Miller, and #5 Senior Noah Lowery. “One player that especially stands out is #55 Sophomore Trace Johnson,” said Lowery. Johnson has an exceedingly positive behavior and optimistic attitude that clearly uplifts the rest of the team, which is necessary when it comes to such a competitive sport. They serve as the backbone of UHS’s Varsity football team with their positive attitudes and outstanding leadership, inspiring their teammates to persevere through adversity and strive for greatness everyday. “The Boot is staying home this year,” said Paul, regarding the showdown against their biggest rival, Colonial High School.
