On July 26th the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool & Wolverine, was released in theaters. The movie not only put Deadpool back on the big screen, but also brought back the character Wolverine. The fan favorite hasn’t been featured in any movies since Hugh Jackman’s then retirement in 2017 after the movie Logan.
The film takes place years after Deadpool goes back in time to bring back his fiance Vanessa. At the beginning of the movie, he is separated from Vanessa, but still content being surrounded by his loved ones until he is brought to the TVA where he is told that his universe will cease to exist because their “anchor being,” Logan, has passed away. This sends Deadpool on a mission through different universes to find a new Wolverine which ends with him and his new friend stuck in the TVA void desperately trying to find a way out and save Deadpool’s universe.
My favorite part of the movie would have to be the amazing cameos. The film features beloved characters from movies like Blade, the original X-men, and Electra. Seeing them back on screen is a great homage to old school Marvel and a lovely way to put these characters to rest. My favorite cameo was Johnny Storm, played by Chris Evans from the early 2000s Fantastic Four movies. The hilarious fake out of Deadpool thinking he was going to say avengers assemble and then revealing he was the human torch made my theater erupt with cheers.
The comedic relief during this movie exceeded my expectations. Deadpool’s never ending spew of witty side comments are always hilarious and this movie is no exception. The references, timing, and creativity enhanced the humorous mood for the audience. Furthermore, the addition of Wolverine and his constant brooding in contrast with the chatterbox deadpool makes for an entertaining dynamic between the two anti-heroes.
The only complaint I have with the film is how it glosses over Deadpool and Vanessa’s relationship. The explanation to why they split is vague and not fully fledged out. The first two Deadpool films were catalyzed by his love for her so the fact that it was presented as a side plot in this film feels a little inconsistent. At the very end of the film there are hints that they might get back together, but it still doesn’t feel like a satisfying ending for their relationship.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this movie to superhero lovers and old school Marvel fans. It may be difficult to follow without any context of the older movies, but if you have a fair amount of Marvel knowledge, then this movie is a must watch.
