The UHS Dance Magnet hosted a Student Choreography Recital, at this event, a select number of students showcased pieces that they each choreographed, casted, and led. Marissa Ritz, Gianna Herrera, and Kanya Parsons all choreographed dances for the show. Ritz’s performance was a melancholic ballad, while Herrera and Parsons’ pieces were more upbeat and playful.
There’s far more to the process than learning and practicing the moves. Many different components make up a great show, such as casting. “I wanted to choose girls who knew each other so they could have chemistry on stage. I called people to the rehearsal and chose dancers that were going to work really well together,” said senior Marissa Ritz. It’s important that choreographers assess everyone’s abilities, in order to place them in a piece that properly suits them. “We try to have everybody on a balanced level to put everything together, everyone has different skills and strengths,” said junior Gianna Herrera.
The show allowed students to present a composition of their own creation to an audience. While giving others the opportunity to support their peers by dancing in a student-led piece.“I liked the recital a lot, I had a lot of fun dancing with these pieces that my friends made,” said sophomore Jaylene Arriaga.
