UHS’s Vet Assisting program collaborated with the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando to host a Holiday Pet Food Drive from December 1st through 15th. This drive’s mission was to collect supplies for the countless families in need with pets.
Vet Assisting accepted any non-perishable food items for pets, such as dry food, canned food, and treats. “Pet Alliance has a pet food pantry where people who are going through a rough time can go and pick up food for their pets. We’re just hoping to get donations for the holiday season to give to them,” said Vet Assisting teacher Ms. Kayla Abramowski.
Since the vet program recently partnered up with the shelter, Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando has generously provided additional opportunities for veterinary students to learn using hands-on experience at their facilities.“They take students from our program for about nine weeks and train them to help learn different things whether it be assisting in surgery, giving vaccines, or helping with exams- so they’re a really great partner for us,” said Abramowski.
There were donations from several teachers and some students as well. “I was aiming for as much as I could get. I donated, some teachers donated, and I had three students donate which was really exciting. I was also offering Cougar Credit for any student who donates,” said Abramowski.
