The Marvels is the latest installment in the Marvel franchise. It was released in theaters on November 10th. The movie received record-setting lows for box office earnings during the opening weekend for any Marvel film.
The movie is centered around the young superhero Miss Marvel, played by Iman Vellani, fighting alongside her favorite hero and role model Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larsen. However, I found it difficult to connect to the plot of a superhero having to save the world from being destroyed. This trope is so overused that it lacks any feeling of suspense for viewers.
This movie was extremely rushed- with the writers having to balance three different characters’ backgrounds, while advancing the plot all within an hour and forty-five minutes of screen time for the entire movie. This makes the movie the shortest in the entire marvel series while also having a big premise in defeating a big villain at the end (Zawe Ashton as Dar Benn the villain). This doesn’t give the viewers enough time to emotionally connect with the characters and root for them but instead felt forced and rushed.
One factor that contributed to the movie’s public disapproval was the reality that Captain Marvel, who isn’t a superhero that many people like, over the other MCU heroes. This to the low sales of “The Marvels” and why this is a MCU movie that I would not watch again.
One good thing that came out of the movie is a potential hint to a future project of the younger generation or apprentices of superheroes that will make up the new avengers.
