That ’90s Show Reunited Former Characters

Alyssia Ibanez, Staff Writer

Fans of That ’70s Show are headed to Point Place in the 90’s with Eric Foreman and Donna Pinciotti’s daughter for the Netflix spinoff series, titled That ‘90s Show.

Topher Grace and Laura Prepon starred as Eric and Donna in the original show, which aired on FOX for eight seasons from 1999-2006. They were joined on screen by Ashton Kutcher (Michael Kelso), Mila Kunis (Jackie Burkhart), Wilmer Valderrama (Fez) and Danny Materson (Steven Hyde). That ‘90s Show is set over a summer vacation with the new cast, and throughout episodes the writers were able to welcome back some of the original cast members in a way that didn’t feel like they needed to participate in every single episode.

In February 2022, Callie Haverda officially nabbed the role of Leia, a teenager who is the perfect combination of her mother and her father. One summer in the 90’s, Eric, Donna and Leia go back to the Foreman’s house the Fourth of July, but while in Point Place, Leia wants a new adventure, which she will find with a new friend group of her own, and a new lover. The new generation, who soon take up residence in the basement of old comprise Jay Kelso (Mace Coronel), feisty girl next door Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide) and her dim older brother Nate (Maxwell Acee Donovan), overachiever Nikki (Sam Morelos) and Ozzie (Reyn Doi).

The show has been a huge success and is currently the number one show on Netflix. It succeeds by establishing a warm and sunny central dynamic among its new central cast of teens. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, now playing grandparents, are a sufficient tie to the forerunner series. The show is distinct from just reliving the glories of That ‘70s Show initial run. Some things are eternal, but it can be nice to infuse an old story with some new spirit.

Some fans of the original show may find enough here to re-pique their interest. Suppose it might be able to tear them away from TikTok, Snapchat, etc. So good luck to the new generation now in residence at Point Place.
